Crystal and Devon

This was a Portrait session done on March 14, 2010. It was actually a photo seminar put up by Jigar (A local wedding/engagement photographer) He setup a 4 part session starting with planning, actual shooting, editing, and post processing. He was able to find this couple (Crystal and Devon) whom recently got engaged. There were 7 photographers chasing them around North Beach, SF for a good 3 hours. Very nice couple and quite photogenic.
The day was beautiful. I couldn’t asked for a better photo shooting weather. It was a big change from all the raining weather we been getting here. As such, I found out that I ended up under exposing a lot of my shots since there was so much light around. The session started around 2:00pm and ended around 5:00pm. The set show here are my favorite 5 pictures. The couple were wearing a black and white theme thus I had to leverage their clothing and converted couple shots as black and white.
Overall, it was a great experience. Learned quite a bit about how to approach and converse with the subjects. I must say, doing couple portraits really made me think more about composition and modeling the couple.
All the shots were done with Canon 5D MKII and Canon 85mm 1.2L

First Post!!

Starting my fist photo blog with some San Francisco downtown street photos.

After reading all the tips and buying all the latest gear, I figure it’s time to takes some real pictures with it.  This is also my toe in the water attempt at street photos.  What made this trip challenging was turning my wife’s downtown shopping trip while pushing a stroller into a photo walk trip.  I must say, having the stroller next to you does help distract people’s attention from you with the big dSLR and zoom lens.  Pretty much I look like a overzealous father with the latest toy taking photo of the kid.  Tip for those that want to venture into street photos, take your kid and stroller with you (or go borrow someone else kid, I’m sure relatives would be happy that you’re giving them free babysitting time).

I also wanted to try something different.  Every time the whole family packs to go out on an event (whether it’s just shopping or visiting the parks, zoo, etc.  I tend to pack every gear and lens I have.  Two big bags full of camera equipment just to go to the local mall.  I would then leave a bag in the car and carry the shoulder bag with as much equipment I can stuff in there.  Usually at least 2-3 lens, flash, etc…  I always had the fear that I might miss that shot I want if I don’t have the right lens.  The sad part about this entire thing is that this is all for an expensive hobby.  I’m not even getting paid to think all that much.  So, I had an epiphany Sunday morning while I was packing up all the bags again.  Why don’t I try with just one lens and and nothing else in the bag.  If I can’t get the picture I want with that lens, it’s not meant to be.  So…

All photos were taken with a Canon 16-35 2.8L MKII on a Canon 5D MKII.  Enjoy.
